Self-Powered Radios
Free yourself from batteries & cords...

Many of the radios you will find at Modern Outpost are self powered through the use of dynamo hand cranks and/or small integrated solar panels. These radios offer the ability to be recharged anywhere & anytime, and are ideal for cabins, cottages & emergency preparedness kits.

Most of these self powered radios will run for more than 30 minutes from a 1-2 minute winding of the dynamo handle, making them ideal for cottages & emergencies when the power is out. They can also run for much longer periods if they are left to fully charge in a sunny window, or charged with an AC adaptor.

All of the self-powered radios featured on this page use NiMh rechargeable battery technology for their internal rechargable. This type of battery provides years of memory-free performance, and is the best eco-friendly solution for these types of products.

Some self-powered radios, like the models by Kaito, offer both a built-in rechargeable battery plus a compartment for any standard or rechargable batteries you wish to use. These 'user' compartments are not connected to the dynamo/solar charging system in order to protect you from accidentally charging standard alkaline batteries (which will fail & leak if subjected to charging).

IMPORTANT: If you are researching dynamo & solar radios, remember that if they don't tell you what type of rechargeable battery is inside, it is likely a NiCd, is likely to fail prematurely, & is toxic to the environment! Make a smarter choice.

It's our humble opinion that portable radios should be tough enough to handle the abuses of outdoor use.

It just makes plain sense to us that if you are going to take your mp3 player with you, it should be shock proof, and waterproof. It does tend to rain from time to time. This is the fun part of the Audio department where we get to show all the extras we've found for your radio & mp3 player. Things like compact waterproof speaker systems that let you take entertainment outdoors in any weather, FM transmitters that play your mp3 through your car radio speakers, headphones that can take anything mother nature can dish out, and antennas that help you pull in stations when you are far from civilization.

The portable speaker systems are often tailor-made for a specific audio device. For example, the Otterbox EGO & ICE BOX are designed for use with various iPod products, but since we try all of these products before we decide to feature them at the Outpost, we will know if they will be able to work with other audio devices.

A quick note regarding the waterproof headphones... they do not sound all that great out of the water. Yes, we'll admit to that, but that is not why these are popular. Put them in water, and the sound make a vast improvement due to the density of the water enhancing the frequency response of the micro speaker drivers. If you do any swimming, snorkeling, diving, or kayaking, you should check out these products.
