It's easy to feel out of touch when you're miles from civilization. So we stock a variety of portable radios that reach far beyond your typical AM or FM dials.
By the way, you don't need to buy batteries for most of these radios!
Some charge with light from a bright window, others wind up, some do both, but all will play for hours per charge.
These are specially useful during emergencies when local radio stations may not broadcasting and your power is out.
We can't carry everything, but occasionally we try. Often we get asked to bring in a particular model from one of our primary vendors: Kaito, Sangean, Eton, Grundig, Freeplay & Griffin. When we do a special order, we will typically make it worth our while, and order several units. If we have a webpage built, it will be featured here. If we don't, we will typically mention it here and then list the radio in our audio clearance area (faster order form for us to populate).
So, if you don't see the radio you want in this list, please contact us and let us know what you are looking for. We will get back to you right away with availability & pricing.
We also list here a number of discontinued models that are also listed in our audio clearance area. These discontinued models still feature our 30-day satisfaction guarantee, and we have you covered for manufacturer warranty support as always.
Most of the radios you will find at Modern Outpost are self powered through the use of dynamo hand cranks and/or small integrated solar panels. These radios offer the ability to be recharged anywhere & anytime, and are ideal for cabins, cottages & emergency preparedness kits.
Most of these self powered radios will run for more than 30 minutes from a 1-2 minute winding of the dynamo handle, making them ideal for cottages & emergencies when the power is out. They can also run for much longer periods if they are left to fully charge in a sunny window, or charged with an AC adaptor.
All of the self-powered radios featured on this page use NiMh rechargeable battery technology for their internal rechargable. This type of battery provides years of memory-free performance, and is the best eco-friendly solution for these types of products.
Some self-powered radios, like the models by Kaito, offer both a built-in rechargeable battery plus a compartment for any standard or rechargable batteries you wish to use. These 'user' compartments are not connected to the dynamo/solar charging system in order to protect you from accidentally charging standard alkaline batteries (which will fail & leak if subjected to charging).
IMPORTANT: If you are researching dynamo & solar radios, remember that if they don't tell you what type of rechargeable battery is inside, it is likely a NiCd, is likely to fail prematurely, & is toxic to the environment! Make a smarter choice.
