Atlas features & functionality...
Mapping Capabilities
Maps are far more useful than simple point to point or coordinate directions. The Atlas comes with a built-in base map of the entire world, & medium detail base map of North America. Also available are dozens of optional highly detailed point-of-interest regional map cards with real 1:24k USGS or NRC topographic data & wildlife/land use management data.
Receiver Technology
Basic GPS units will chart your position within 40 meters, but a WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) enabled GPS unit can utilize signals from both land stations & satellites to pinpoint your position to within 3 meters. The Atlas is WAAS enabled, allowing you to take advantage of this increased accuracy. The Atlas utilizes a sensitive 12-channel receiver for obtaining positional information quickly and reliably.
External Antenna
The Atlas' external antenna jack improves its usefulness inside a vehicle where GPS signal reception is often limited. The Atlas' optional external antenna is designed for both GPS & WAAS reception.
PC Interface
A PC interface is useful when you want to transfer custom maps & route plans you create using available mapping software, or store GPS data on your PC. Atlas options include a PC multimedia card reader & RS-232 data cable so you can conveniently transfer information to & from your PC.
Memory
The Atlas comes with expanded memory that helps you recall addresses & phone numbers of your favorite points of interest. The built-in backup memory stores GPS data for decades. It will also remember up to 1,000 waypoints, 1,000 event markers, 100 reversible routes, & 10 plot trails with 10,000 points per trail. Compact memory cards can store up to 128MB of data.
User Interface
Big display screens are always preferred with mapping GPS units. The Atlas provides the largest currently available on a handheld unit. Other advanced Atlas interface features include full & splitscreen display options, 37 zoom levels for maps (0.05-4,000 miles), easy cursor control using the rocker button, easy or advanced operation modes, 42 selectable graphic symbols for waypoints or events, searchable databases of highways & points of interest, Man Overboard capability, & audible alarms. An electroluminescent backlit display makes it easy to read in dark places.
