Using The Powerfilm R-7 Rollable Solar Panel Helping you get the most out of this leading solar panel
by Powerfilm Solar (R-7)
What's special about this panel?
The Powerfilm R-7 panel is the smallest of the Powerfilm rollable line. It produces 7 Watts of power in full sun. At just 2 feet in length, and 14 inches wide, it fits very well onto the back of most backpacks. It is our #1 panel for backpackers heading to Nepal, and for kayakers wanting to keep GPS & cameras running.
How do I use this panel?
Direct-Connection to your devices
Powerfilm provides a standard 12V CLA socket, like the socket in the dashboard of your car. You can therefore connect any device that has a car adaptor directly to the panel.
CAVEAT: Many devices require a minimum amount of power to operate or charge. So if you try connecting such fussy devices to the R-7 panel, they will complain, or not work at all, if the Powerfilm R-7 is not providing the power they want. Computers, smart phones, and some battery chargers fall into this category. The way to avoid this is to use a solar storage battery to collect the power generated by the Powerfilm panel, and deliver what your devices are asking for...
Connect to a solar storage battery
Always recommended, this panel can be connected to most 12V solar storage batteries. Doing this allows you to collect the power you generate during the day for use anytime... even at night when most people do their daily device charging duties.

Connect a charger
The last link in the chain is to select chargers for your devices that can connect to your solar storage battery (or direct to the panel in a pinch).
Remember that ordinary wall chargers will not work with solar panels since they are wanting 120V AC (not 12V DC). So, select chargers that come with car plugs. For example...

PowerFilm Solar created their rollable line of solar panels to address the needs of the marine market. Kayaks, canoes, fishing boats, sailboats, yachts. It is also great for backpackers, field researchers, and humanitarian programs that expect to get wet, but need a solar panel that can handle the toughest environments. If you need a rugged panel to keep batteries & equipment running, Powerfilm panels should be at the top of your list.
Powerfilm are among the most sensitive solar cells available. Powerfilm panels will turn on earlier in the day, and turn off later in the day than rigid silicon panels & most other thin film technologies. Their sensitivity also makes Powerfilm panels the best choice for mountainous regions with variable weather, northern locations where there are plenty of low-intensity daylight hours in the summer, and anywhere you might encounter overcast or partial shade conditions.
