1. Better currency exchange
Did you know that the exchange rate you saw on the news last night is not the same as your credit card will give you? No, they need to take their cut, so they typically charge at about 2% different from the "interbank" rate you see on TV. This means that if you see a $1.00 Par Canadian dollar, you will only get $0.98 if you shop with a US store.
So we just saved you 2% by letting you shop in Canadian $$

2. No provincial tax (except BC & other HST provinces)
Canada Post, FedEx, UPS, and other shipping companies have a relationship with Revenue Canada. Yeah, those guys are everywhere. They will collect the GST and PST on shipments coming up from the US. But, if you shop with Modern Outpost, you will only pay GST, because we cannot remit provincial taxes to other provinces. The exception of course is the HST... no one can escape that one it looks like. No wonder Ottawa & the provinces like it!

3. No hidden shipping or border fees
Did you know that when a US shop tells you that their shipping rate to Canada is $20, that this usually does not include brokerage & duties & taxes & taxes on the brokerage, delivery surcharges & disbursement fees? FedEx, UPS, and other shipping companies typically charge $20-$30 per shipment to clear it through customs, regardless of the shipment value. Don't forget that you then also have to pay GST or HST on those same brokerage charges! Don't forget that you may have to pay some import duties too.

UPS Rural service warning:
In our local area of 70,000 people, UPS charges a 'remote area delivery' surcharge of $30 on top of all their other fees. Does this apply to you in your area?
Let's see, so $15+ for shipping, $20+ for brokerage, $30 for 'remote area delivery'... that's more than $65 before adding the price of the product itself!
Think shopping from the US is a great deal? Think again.

Using US Post/Canada Post instead? This is a better deal, but very few US retailers will offer you postal service, because the courier rates are so cheap in the US, and provide real-time tracking. If you find a US shop that will mail to you, there will be a small brokerage handling fee of around $7, plus GST/HST, plus PST if applicable, plus all the taxes on the value of the shipment, plus any applicable duties. You might want to get it insured too - we've had packages take 6 weeks to go 400kms via US Post.

We just think this is the right thing to do. Why should you be on the hook for anything if someone else's product fails? The extra benefit is that this policy of ours is further incentive for us to carry only the most reliable products we can find. We call it our "No Crap" policy.
